Auburndale is part of the 13 Villages of Newton, Ma. It is also referred to as Auburndale-on-the-Charles. This area of Newton is known for it's various jogging paths along the river as well as it's numerous landmarks that are on the National Registery of Historic Places.
The History of Auburndale is most closely tied to the now closed Norumbega Park which was open from 1897-1963. In the early 1900's the waterway of the Newton area, was one of the most heavily used stretchs of water for canoeing in the world. Norumbega Park was a very popular amusement park that housed the largest zoo and outdoor theatre in the United States. It was built by the Commonwealth Street Railway to increase the city dwellers of Boston to take the trolley out of the city to Auburndale to enjoy the park as well as all of it's amenities. The downfall of the park began after the end of WWII.
